Best of 2018 recognized at USATF Indiana Awards Celebration

USATF Indiana held its annual Awards Celebration on Saturday (16-Feb) where it recognized the 2018 Athletes of the Year, the 2018 Athletes of the Month, the 2018 Hoosier Cross Country Grand Prix champions and also honored the receipant of the annual President's Award.

The event's co-emcees were Larra Overton and Terry Brahm.  Overton is local TV personsality and also a track & field analyst for the Big Ten and SEC networks.  Brahm is a 1988 Olympian and won a bronze medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships held in Indianapolis.

Thirty Seven taleted athletes honored as Athletes of the Year
Added to the list of Athlete of the Year categories this year was the U20 division in track & field and cross country.  In track & field, Nate Patterson (Plymouth) and Shelby Tyler (Nobelsville) won the awards as both leaped to Indiana state titles in the high jump. Patterson set a new state record of 7-4 at the state championships. In addition to winning the Indiana state title,  Tyler also was the USATF U20 national champion, the New Balance Nationals winner, and then went on to compete at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland where she finished eleventh. In cross country the honors went to Cole Hocker (Indianapolis) and Emma Wilson (Greencastle).  Both won Indiana high school state championships in the fall.  Hocker went on to finish 2nd at the Nike Nationals in Portland and then become just the third Hoosier to win the prestigious Foot Locker national championships.  Wilson won her second straight Indiana title and then qualified for the Nike Nationals where she finished 32nd.
