Roach, Zirkle, and Duffus Shine in the Big Apple

Seven (7) Indiana athletes competed in the 2016 USATF Hershey Indoor Championships in New York City with three earning trips to the awards podium for finishing in the top three in their events.  The championships were held March 11-13 in the new Ocean Breaze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

Picking up silver medals for their 2nd place finishes were Ethan Roach of West Terre Haute in the 55m (15-16 boys) and Benjamin Zirkle of Crown Point in the High Jump (13-14 boys).

Roach ran 6.71 to finish behind the meet record setting performance of Senaca Milledge, Jr. from Florida.  He also finished seventh in the 200m running 23.45.   Zirkle leaped 1.65m (5-05.00) and was just 2 inches below the winning height by Connor Jenkins of Oklahoma.  Zirkle also finished 12th in the 800m running 2:20.74 and 29th in the 200m in a time of 28.60. " I had a lot of fun on the track, it was really competitive," stated Zirkle. I made a lot of great memories with people I had never met before. Besides the track, the whole place seemed like something I would see on television, it was hard to believe I was there."
Zoe Duffus of Fort Wayne ran a smart and couragous race as she finished third in the 1500m (13-14 girls) in a time of 4:43.58. Duffus took the lead with 350 meters to go with a decisive move on the backstretch and opened up a 20 meter lead on New Yorkers Lauryn Heskin and Sophia Muccini.  She held the lead until the final 50m when Heskin and Muccini were able to go her down the homestretch. Heskin won in 4:42.84 to add to her 800m and 3000m victories from earlier in the meet. All three easily broke the old meet record of 4:47.79.  Duffus's time converts to appromitetly 5:03 for 1600m.
