Vertical Jumpers Return to Defend Titles At USA Masters Championships In North Carolina

7/17/2014

The 2014 USA Masters Outdoor Championships began this morning in Winston-Salem, N.C. and run through Sunday.  The championship is being held on the campus of Wake Forrest University.  Fifteen (15) USATF Indiana members are entered in a total of twenty-five (25) events.

Of the fifteen athletes entered four will return to defend the titles they won last year in Olathe, Kansas.

Returning champions, all vertical jumpers, from last year's competition are:

  • Brenda Babits (Fort Wayne) - W50 Pole Vault
  • Chet Clodfelter (Roachdale) - M50 Pole Vault
  • Gary Hunter (Fort Wayne) - M55 Pole Vault
  • Matthew McCubbins (South Bend) - M40 High Jump
Karen Rieger of Indianapolis won the W45 Pole Vault last year but will only compete in the W50 100m in Winston-Salem.

Hunter, 58, is the U.S. pole vault record holder in the 50-54 and 55-59 divisions and has won the outdoor national title the last eight years and ten out of the last eleven years.
