Duffus Selected as March Athlete of the Month

Zoe Duffus, 14, of Fort Wayne has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for March 2017.
At the USATF Hershey Youth Indoor Championships held March 10-12 in New York, Duffus won the 1500m and 3000m titles in the 15-16 division.  She began by winning the 3000m by running a controlled race where she sat in second place until 900m to go and then ran a 2:43 over the final 800m to cross the line 13 seconds clear of second place.  Her winning time was 10:23.59.

At last year’s championships Duffus was leading the 1500m coming off the final turn but was out kicked by two runners down the straightaway and finished third.  This year she went to the front early and decisively passing the 400m in 1:14 and 800m in 2:29.  She maintained the fast pace as her lead continued to grow and at the line she stopped the clock at 4:40.62 to win by over 15 seconds.  Her time established a new meet record by over seven seconds.
