Downs selected as February Athlete of the Month

Jordan Downs, 23, of Merrillville, has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for February 2019. Downs is a senior at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind.

Downs had an amazing month of February as he became the first Indiana member to win an open USA title in over 10 years.  His month started off on February 2 he won the pole vault clearing 16-0¾ and the long jump with a leap of 25-4¼ at the IWU Indoor Midwest Indoor Classic in Marion, Ind.
The following week at the Crossroads League Championships held at Taylor Univeristy he again won the pole vault (16-4¾) and long jump (25-10) as he lead his team to the league title.
But it was the next week that put Downs on the national radar as he won the long jump at the Toyota USATF Indoor Championships in New York.  He initially took the lead in round 2 with a mark of 24-9¼ but that was surpassed by Malik Moffett in round 5.  In the final round, jumping last and needing to beat Mallik's 25-2¾, Downs soared 1¾ inches further than Malik's mark and won with a leap of 25-4½.

Note: On March 2-3 Downs compted in NAIA national championships in Brookings, SD.  He won the long jump title, for the second year in a row, with a mark of 25-9½ and fnished third in the pole vault clearing 16-4¾.
