Fendel Selected as April Athlete of the Month

Gabe Fendel, 17, of Fishers has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for April 2017.   On April 7 Fendel ran 8:50.56 for 3200m to finish tenth in the highly competitive Arcadia Invitational in California.  The time makes him the fifth fastest Indiana scholastic all-time trailing only Futsum Zienasellassie (8:47.75), Ben Veatch (8:47.85), Rudy Chapa (8:48.05), and Tim Keough (8:49.85).  He is now ahead of Indiana legends Christian Wager, Chris Walden, and Carey Pinkowski on the all-time list.   race video (via RunnerSpace)

On April 14, Fendel won the prestigious Flashes Showcase 1 Mile at Franklin Central High School.  His time of 4:11.31 established a new meet record. The previous record was 4:11.78 set by Veatch last year. race video (via MileSplit)

A week later he won the 800m at the Bill Self Invitational in Franklin; running 1:58.24.  Four days later (April 25) he ran 1:54.99 at the Miller Invitational in Noblesville.  The time broke the 25 year old record held by Matt Sparks.

Fendel has a 1600m personal best of 4:09.18 from last year.  He is one of only seven athletes to currently have a top 25 all-time performance at 1600m and 3200m.  The others are Zienasellassie, Veatch, Chapa, Wagner, Waldren, and Scott Hiles.
