Irby selected as June Athlete of the Month

Lynna Irby, 18, of Indianapolis has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for June 2017.
Irby, a recent grad of Pike High School, ended her historic scholastic career with milestone performances on several levels.  On June 3 she won the 100m, 200m, and 400m at the Indiana High School state championships  for the fourth straight year.  Her 12 state titles surpassed the 11 won by Maicel Malone in the mid-80s.  In the 100m Irby ran to a career best time of 11.41 which broke her own state meet record of 11.50 from 2015 and 2016.  The time moved her up to #2 on the Indiana all-time list behind the 11.39 run by Candyce McGrone in 2008.  Her second victory came in the 400m where she ran a controlled 53.81 to win by nearly a full second. To end the evening, and her historical IHSAA championship career, Irby ran 23.41 in the 200m to defeat arguably the greatest 200m field ever in Indiana state history.  The time was also a career best and again moved her up the #2 position on the Indiana all-time list behind the 23.12 run by Malone in 1986.
The following week Irby won the 200m at the Midwest Meet of Champions running 23.96.  It marked the fourth time in her career running under 24 seconds in the event.
At the New Balance Nationals the following week Irby official ended her prep career as she won the 400m in 52.83.

Irby will attend and compete for the University of Georgia in the fall.
