Garrett selected as June Athlete of the Month

Ty Garrett, 15, of Bargersville has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for June 2020.  Garrett just completed his freshmen year at Center Grove High School.

On June 12-13, Garrett traveled to Sun Valley, Arizona to compete in the Desert Dream-Last Hurrah Invitational.

In Arizona he won both the 1600m and 3200m.  In the 1600m, held on Friday,  he ran to a career best time of 4:22.41.  His previous best time was 4:24.  Then on Saturday night he used an explosive last 400m stopping the clock at 9:08.97.

The time broke the Indiana freshmen class record of 9:11.47 set in 2009 by Futsum Zienasellassie.  According to Milesplit.com the time is the fifth fastest run by a freshmen over the past 20 years.

Garret was named the 2019 USATF Indiana Athlete of the Year (boys 15-16 cross country).  He earned all-American honors at the 2019 USATF Junior Olympic championships in both track & field (2000m steeplechase) and cross country.
