Volz selected as July Athlete of the Month

Deakin Volz, 19, of Bloomington has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for July 2016.
On July 23, Volz won the pole vault at the IIAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.  He cleared a career best 5.65m (18-6½) to defeat Kurtis Marschall of Australia by 4 inches.  Volz’s winning performance was a career best by over 6 inches and makes him the #3 U20 performer in U.S. history.  He qualified to represent Team USA following his second place finish at the USATF championships in June where he cleared 17-10½.
He recently completed his freshmen year at Virginia Tech.  He was the 2014 and 2015 Indiana state high school champion in the pole vault for Bloomington South High School.  His 17-6 winning performance at the 2015 championships established a new state championship meet record.  During his senior year he broke the national high school record in the indoor pole vault with a clearance of 17-11¼.  That was his career best until last month’s performance in Poland.
