Elliott and Smith shine at USATF Youth Championships in Georgia
The
2021 USATF Youth Outdoor Championships
concluded on Saturday (26-Jun) in Rome, GA.
Twenty-four (24) athletes from USATF Indiana competed in the championships in a total of forty-five events.
Indiana athletes won six national titles and earned forty trips to the awards podium for placing in the top eight in their events.
Leading the way for the locals were
Ramiah Elliott
(Indiana Storm, Indianapolis) and
Tucker Smith
(unattached, Columbus).
Elliott, a four time USATF Indiana athlete of the year and four time high school state champion, who three events in the 17-18 division. In the 100m she stopped the clock at 11.78 tying her career best time. In the 200m (24.11) and 400m (54.38) she ran her 2021 best times. Elliott just completed her junior year at North Central High School.
Smith, a three time USATF Indiana athlete of the year, won the 17-18 boys shot put with a near record throw of 20.39m (66-10¾). He was just 1¾" shy of the national youth record set in 1997 by Dwight Johnson of Arizona. Smith just completed his junior year at Columbus North High School.
Brycen Kelly
(Indiana BLAST TC, Fort Wayne) and
Andrew McLean
(unattached) of Columbus also won national titles. Kelly won the 11-12 boys 200m running 26.82 which was just off his career best time of 26.74 run in the qualifying round. He also finished second in the 400m (57.80, career best) and the 80m Hurdles (13.81). McLean won 15-16 boys Javelin with a throw of 43.39m (142-4).
Becca Robbins
(unattached) of Linton earned four visits to the awards podium. Competing in the 15-16 girls division she finished third in the Shot Put and fourth in the Discus, Javelin, and Hammer Throw.
Competing in the 8U girls division
Carrington Blackmon
(Indiana Storm) of Indianapolis had three top-3 finishes. In the 100m and 200m she finished second and in the 400m she was third.
Also earning three trips to the podium were
Hannah Alexander
(Body in Training, Noblesville) in the girls 15-16 division and
Eva Da Costa
(Indiana Storm, Indianapolis) in the girls 9-10 division. Alexander finished second in the Discus (39.61m) and Hammer Throw (28.30m) and was fifth in the Shot Put (10.52m). She set career bests in all three events.
Da Costa was third in the 100m (14.68 - career best), fourth in the 200m, and fifth in the 400m (1:13.14 - career best)
Joining Alexander, Blackmon, and Kelly as silver medalist were
Zeke Benedict
(Body in Training),
Caitlin Clark
(Body in Training),
Emily Herndon
(unattached),
Mary Hodges
(Indiana Storm), and
Julia Score
(Body in Training).
Benedict was second in the boys 13-14 400m and also finished third in the 800m.
Clark finished second in the girls 9-10 Javelin.
Herdon was second in the girls 17-18 Shot Put.
Hodges competing in the girls 17-18 division finished second in the 800m and fifth in the 1500m.
Score finished second in the girls 13-14 3000m and also finished fourth in the 1500m.
