Lucas selected as May Athlete of the Month

Hadley Lucas, 16, of Bloomington has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for May 2022.   Lucas, who recently completed her sophmore year at Bloomington North High School, is a two-time (2016, 2018) USATF Indiana Athlete of the Year.

On the final weekend in April, Lucas won the Shot Put and Discus at the Conference Indiana Championships.  In the Shot Put she established a new personal best of 49-6 which ranks #7 on the all-time Indiana performer list; just 18.5 inches short of the state record set in 2012 by Cassandra Wertman.

On May 10 she again won the Shot Put and Discus Throw as the Bloomington North Invitational.

She then began her IHSAA tournment run by capturing sectional titles with marks of 163-08 (Discus) and 47-05 (Shot Put).  The Discus performances landed her at #4 on the Indiana all-time performer list and broke the school record (161-10) held since 2000 by her current coach Sarah Hamidovic (nee Fields).

One week later she captured regional titles in both events (46-11 Shot Put; 161-09 Discus Throw) Only four other girls in state history have thrown further in the Discus.

And then she rolled into the Indiana State Championships and once again earned gold medals in both the Shot Put (46-04.25) and Discus Throw (147-04).  She is the third Bloomington North female to win the Discus title.  Her coach, Sara Fields was the Indiana state champion in 2000 and then Rachel Deloney won the event three times in the 00's.

Lucas plans to compete at the New Balance Outdoor Championships Championship in Philadelphia and then possibly the USATF Junior Olympic nationals in July.
