Mathison selected as January Athlete of the Month

Kole Mathison, 19, of Carmel has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for January 2024. Mathison, a freshman at the University of Colorado, is a 2023 graduate of Carmel High School.

On January 20, at the USATF National U20 Olympic Cross Country Championships in
Mechanicsville, VA he finished second covering the 8 km course on a cold and windy day in 24:19. The race was won by Kevin Sanchez of Texas in a time of 24:08. By placing in the top six, Mathison qualified for the world championships (March 30; Belgrade, Serbia) where he will represent Team USA for the second year in a row. At last year's World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Austrial he finished 24th to help Team USA win the team bronze medal. It was the first U20 men's team medal for Team USA in 40 years.

One week earlier, he ran 8:20.38 for 3000m at the Potts Field Invitational in Bouilder, CO.

Other Notable Performances by USATF Indiana Members in January

Julia Kiesler, 19, of Columbus finished 8th at the USATF U20 Cross Country Championships in Mechanicsville, VA. She also ran 9:39.32 for 3000m at the University of Washington Indoor Preview. 

Grace Liang, 37, of West Lafayette ran 7.97 (60m) and 27.13 (200m) and jumped  5.33m (Long Junp) at the Wabash College Invitational. She also ran 10.68 (60m Hurdles) at the Indiana Tech Invitational.

Evie Miller, 23, (Three Rivers Running) of Fort Wayne ran 16:38.43 for 5000m to win the IUPUI Invitational and also ran 9:37.84 (3000m) at the Mastodon Invitational in Fort Wayne.

Kingston Thompson, 15, (Indiana Elite T&F) of Indianapolis ran 7.33 (60m) and 23.19 (200m) at the University of Michigan High School Invitational.

Mya Weick, 16, of Corydon threw 34-7¾ in the weight throw at the Southeast Showdown in Louisville, KY.
