Mathison selected as October Athlete of the Month

Kole Mathison, 17, of Carmel has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for October 2022.

On October 29, Mathison, a senior at Carmel High School, won the Indiana high school state title on the historic Lavern Gibson course in Terre Haute.  Mathison ran away from the field down the stretch clocking a 15:03 for his first state cross country title. It was the third straight year he finished in the top-five (fourth last year, third in 2020) and his time was the third-fastest in the state finals at the course.  He defeated teammate Tony Provenzano by nine seconds as the Carmel squad won the team title 103-106 over Zionsville.  During the awards ceremony Mathison was announced as the recipient of the IHSAA mental attitude award in boys cross country. The annual recipient of the award is nominated by their principal and coach, and were determined by the IHSAA Executive Committee to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability during their four years of high school.  Bridget Gallagher, of Guerin Catholic High School and the September USATF Indiana athlete of the month, was the recipient of the girls award.

Leading up to the state championships, Mathison won the IHSAA regional and semi-state titles.  On October 15 he ran 14:57 on the Noblesville course to win the regional title for the third straight year.  His time is the #2 time ever on the course (Ben Veatch, 2016, 14:54). The following week ran 14:57 on the Blue River Cross Country course in Shelbyville to win his third consecutive semi-state title and establish a new course record (Cole Hocker, 2018, 15:03).

Mathison has announced he plans to matriculate to the University of Colorado next year.
