Southerland selected as May Athlete of the Month

Nicki Southerland, 18, of Muncie has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for May 2024. Southerland, a recent gradudate of Delta High School, has announced she will matriculate to Notre Dame in the fall.

Southerland competed 16 times during the month of May. 

She started the month off winning the 400m (58.66), 800m (2:20.37) and 1600m (4:43.52) at the Delaware County Championships on May 3. Four days later she won the 800m (2:07.64) and 1600m (4:42.65) at the Hoosier Heritage Conference Championships.

She then went on to sweep the 800m and 1600m titles at the IHSAA sectional, regional and state championships. At the state championships she won the 1600m, for the second year in a row, running 4:41.98 and the just 75 minutes later stopped the clock at 2:06.47 to captured the 800m title.  She ended her Indiana high school career with four state titles (3200m in 2022, 1600m in 2023, and 800m and 1600m in 2024).

Between the regional and state championships she traveled to Alabama to compete in the RunningLane Track Championships; where she won the 1-mile running 4:40.51 (4:38.87 1600m enroute - #2 Indiana all-time).

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES IN MAY


Hannah Alexander of Noblesville finished 4th in the Discus (146-06) and 6th in the Shot Put (44-01½) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington. Earlier in the month she threw 163-10 in the Discus Throw; #4 Indiana all-time.

Martin Barco of Martinsville won the 800m (1:50.97, #18 Indiana all-time) and 1600m (4:06.34) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington. Earlier in the month he won the Trials of Miles 1 Mile  (4:02.94; #2 Indiana all-time) in New York.

Makenna Carpenter finished 7th in the Pole Vault (11-06) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Gia Clay of Indianapolis finished 2nd in the 400m (56.23) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Brock Conrad of Corydon finished 7th in the  Discus (162-06) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Shane Conroy of Valparaiso finished 6th in the 3200m (9:02.69) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Kya Crooke of Fishers won the High Jump (5-11, #9 Indiana all-time) and finished 3rd in the Long Jump (19-01½) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Kenzie Crooke of Fishers finished 8th in the 300m Hurdles (45.01) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Tyler Dillon of Muncie finished 9th in the 800m (1:56.28) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Libby Dowty of Morgantown finished 2nd in the 3200m (10:15.14, #10 Indiana all-time) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Dede Eberle of Bloomington won the 100m Hurdles (14.25) and finished 7th in the Long Jump (17-10¾) and 9th in the 300m Hurdles (45.03) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington. At the regional championships she ran 14.12 in the 100m Hurdles; #14 Indiana all-time.

Nadia Ford of Fort Wayne finished 6th in the 100m (12.32) and 6th in the 200m (25.22) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Kamyren Garrett of Indianapolis finished third in the High Jump (2.14m) at the BIG TEN Championships. Garrett has qualified for the Olympic Trials. Garrett competes for the University of Illinois.

Gabriela Grande Rosas of Carmel finished 6th in the 400m (56.88) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Eli Griffin of Roanoke finished 2nd in the Pole Vault (15-06) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Luke Griner of North Webster finished 4th in the 800m (1:46.53) at the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, KY to qualify for the NCAA finals and the Olympic Trials. Griner competes for the U.S. Military Academy.

Jessica Hegedus of Avon finished 7th in the 1600m (4:54.13) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Luke Himes of McCordsville finished 7th in the Shot Put (56-10¾) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington. On May 2 he threw 68-10 in the Shot Put; #3 Indiana all-time.

Charity Hufnagel of Michigantown finished 2nd in the Heptathlon (5914 pts.) and 4th in the High Jump (1.84m) at the SEC Championships. She won the High Jump at the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, KY. She has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the High Jump. Hufnagel competes for the University of Kentucky.

Tacoria Humphrey of Indianapolis won the Long Jump (6.42m) at the BIG TEN Championships in Ann Arbor, MI. She has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the Long Jump. Humphrey competes for the University of Illinois.

Cody Johnston of finished 2nd in the Pole Vault (5.42m) at the BIG TEN Championships in Ann Arbor, MI. Johnston competes for the University of Illinois.

Antonio Laidler of Bloomington finished 2nd in the 100m (10.19) at the BIG TEN Championships in Ann Arbor, MI. He has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100m. Laidler competes for the University of Indiana.

Savannah Lake of Greenfield finished 3rd in the 100m (12.21) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Hadley Lucas of Bloomington won the Shot Put (51-11 - meet record) and the Discus Throw 160-06 - meet record) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Camden Marshall of Bloomington finished 2nd in the 800m (1:48.17) at the BIG TEN Championships in Ann Arbor, MI and ran a career best of 1:45.48 to finish seventh at the NCAA East Regionals. He has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 800m. Marshall competes for the University of Indiana.

Emily Norris of Carmel finished 8th in the  200m (25.57) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Carter Pheifer of Greenwood finished 5th in the Pole Vault (15-03) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Margaret Powers of Fishers finished 4th in the 1600m (4:52.54) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

PaShence Purnell of Indianapolis finished 4th in the 300m Hurdles (44.31) and 7th in the 100m Hurdles (15.09) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Jordan Randall of Warsaw finished 3rd in the High Jump (6-08) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Erin Reese of Terre Haute won the Hammer Thrown (71.42m) at the Billy Hayes Invitational; qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the Hammer Throw.

Chanler Robinson of Indianapolis finished 2nd in the 400m Hurdles (57.20) at the BIG TEN Championships in Ann Arbor, MI  She has qualified for the Olympic Trials.. Robinson competes for Ohio State University.

Isaac Roman of Cedar Lake finished 6th in the  Pole Vault (15-00) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Aubrey Runyon of Franklin finished 5th in the 100m Hurdles (14.82) and 5th in the 300m Hurdles (44.38( at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Mason Schmitz of Fortville finished 4th in the 800m (1:52.98) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Ashlyn Schwab of Brownsburg finished 3rd in the Pole Vault (12-00) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Julia Score of Noblesville finished 8th in the 1600m (4:54.28) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Laila Smith of Indianapolis won the 300m Hurdles (43.35) and finished 2nd in the 100m Hurdles (14.66) and Long Jump (19-03¾) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Elise Smith of McCordsville finished 4th in the 200m (25.10) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Brion Stephens of Indianapolis finished 2nd in the High Jump (2.17m) at the ACC Championships in Atlanta, GA.  He has qualified for the Olympic Trials. Stephens competes for the University Louisville.

Kaitlyn Stewart of Floyds Knobs finished 3rd in the 1600m (4:50.81) and 6th in the 3200m (10:34.22) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Delaney Teachnor of Noblesville finished 2nd in the Pole Vault (12-03) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Hayden Tobias of Fishers won the Shot Put (20.00m) at the BIG TEN Championships in Ann Arbor, MI. He has qualified for the Olympic Trials. Tobias competes for Ohio State University.

Jila Vaden of Indianapolis won the Long Jump (20-00¾) and finished 2nd in the 100m (12.11) and 3rd in the 200m (24.94) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Jaylen Walcott of Indianapolis finished 8th in the  Pole Vault (15-00) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Ivan Weaver of Indianapolis finished 2nd in the 400m (48.45) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Addison Wiley of Huntington finished 3rd in the 1500m (4:02.78) at the Edwin Moses Legends Meet in Atlanta.  Wiley has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 800m and 1500m.

Allie Wilson of Indianapolis finished 6th in the 800m (2:00.59) at the LA Grand Prix in Los Angeles.

Waverly Woolever of Noblesville finished 7th in the High Jump (5-05) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.

Doug Yoder of Goshen finished 3rd in the Discus (150-01) at the IHSAA state championships in Bloomington.
