Steury selected as August Athlete of the Month

Izaiah Steury, 18, of Pleasant Lake has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for August 2020.  Steury is a junior at Angola High School.

With the COVID pandemic canceling the regular outdoor season Steury took advantage of meets in Illiniois and Tennessee in late July and early August to make his mark on Indiana history.  The cumlmination of his late season was a second place finish in the high school 3200m at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, Tennessee on August 15.  In Nashville Steury ran 8:57.17 to improve on his previous career best, run in February, by over 14 seconds.  According to IndianaRunner.com, the time places him #15 on the all-time Indiana high school list.

At the begining of the month, Steury traveled to Illinois Meet of Champions in Chicago where he won the 1 mile (4:14.72) and 3200m (9:17.49) and finished fourth in the 800m (1:56.28).  The times in the 800m and 1 mile were both career best times.  In the 1 mile he passed through the 1500m in 3:58.08 and 1600m in 4:12.85.

After Nashville he immediatly turned his attention to the cross country season and won three early season meets. On August 18, just three days after Nashville, he won the Dekalb Invitational runnng 12:35 for 4 km.  Four days later he ran 15:23 for 5 km to win the Huntington North Invitational.  He then finished off a very busy month by winning the Baron Classic in 15:55 (5 km).

At last year's IHSAA cross country state finals Steury finished seventh and is the #3 returner.
