I went into the race with the support of my husband, Conor Holt who helped me develop my training program, and the rest of my family and friends at home. Despite me not having anyone available to crew me at the race, it took a small army to be able to get me there. My parents watched my son Blaize for the weekend and took him to all of his events for the weekend while my husband worked. I rode to Cleveland with a friend from my hometown that was also running this weekend. My team at Cypress Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center held things together so I could come and have fun knowing that everything would be running smooth there. The residents of the nursing home gave me lots of well wishes before I left and a last minute phone call to my son before the race consisted of "Good luck Mommy, let's both run like cheetahs!" (he had a kids race the same morning). I took off with some of the men at a comfortable pace and had the opportunity to meet Harvey Lewis. He gave me some wonderful pointers along the way and helped me focus on staying cool early as temperatures were to enter the 90's. We ran lots of .88 mile circles throughout the day around beautiful Edgewater Park and was able to watch the boats out in the lake all day (wishing I could take a break and cool off in the water!). Around 12 hours in, I had eaten something that didn't agree with my stomach so took a break, called Conor Holt who gave me some pointers for how to push through and then met with Dr. Lovy for a few minutes on how to get back on track with getting nutrition. Everyone was so amazing to me as they knew that I came without a crew. The hydration crew filled my bottles even when I was too tired to tell them what kind, I set it on top of the one I was wanting and when I came back around, they had it magically filled again. The people in the tent next to me noticed that we were running low on ice as we were using a ton to stay cool and sent someone to a store to get us more. Tracey Outlaw was wonderful to me showing me pictures along the way and telling me some of the supportive comments that people I know and love were posting to his pictures. I met some amazing runners out there and was so amazed by the abilities of so many that set their own PR's and won age groups. It was such an incredible experience for all of us to give everything we had at that park. It is certainly an honor to place at such an event! Back to Top
