USATF Indiana athletes delivered a strong weekend of performances at the USATF Indoor Championships, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Center in Staten Island, New York. The Hoosier contingent was highlighted by two national titles and a pair of international team selections as Addison Wiley and Charity Hufnagel punched their tickets to represent Team USA at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Kujawy Pomorze, Poland.
Addison Wiley (adidas, Huntington) captured the women’s 800m national title in a personal best 1:59.43 after advancing through the opening round in 2:00.64. The victory marked Wiley’s first USA national title and secured her a place on Team USA for the World Championships.
Charity Hufnagel (Jeffersonville) soared to gold in the high jump, clearing 1.96m to claim the national championship and her own Team USA berth.
Jessica Mercier (Bloomington)earned a silver medal in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.55m. Mercier has provisionally earned a Team USA berth but must achieve the World Championships entry standard of 4.70m by Sunday, March 8 to secure selection. Her current career best stands at 4.57m.
Indiana athletes also produced multiple top-eight finishes against the nation’s best:
Gabriela Leon (Jeffersonville) - 4th, Pole Vault, 4.55m
Ella Scally (Fishers) - 7th, Long Jump, 6.31m
Trevor Stephenson (Caledonia, MI) - 11th, Pole Vault, 5.50m
