Luke Combs, 18, of Lapel, Ind. has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for January 2021.  Combs is a freshman at the United State Air Force Acedemy in Colorado.  He graduated from Lapel High School in 2020.

On February 1, Combs finished 20th at the Silver State Collegiate XC Challenge in Nevada.  He covered the 8 km course in 23:47.  The event featured the top two teaams in the country (Northern Arizona and BYU).  Combs was the #3 finisher for Air Force as their top five all finished within 12 seconds of each other.  The team placed fifth behind BYU, Northern Arizona, Washington, and Notre Dame.

One week earlier Combs made his Air Force debut as he ran 4:25.23 in the mile at 6,788′ elevation at the Air Force Invitational.

While at Lapel High School, Combs finished third at the IHSAA state championships in cross country and track (1600m).  His high school bests were 4:13.70 (1600m) and 9:20.32 (3200m).  In 2016 he earned all-American honors as he finished 12th in the 13-14 division at the National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships.
