This is my first year running club track so it is also my first time at Junior Olympics. I competed in both the 200m and the 400m just missing the 200m final by placing 9th. I ran a PR of 48.70 to advance to the 400m final. I knew in order to have a chance of winning I would have to run my best race. In the final I was able to do just that with another PR of 47.75. I'm thankful to represent Advancement Through Athletics and Indiana as this year's 15-16 400m Champion!
This was my first year competing at the national level of Junior Olympics. Since this was also my last year of eligibility, I was very excited to take home a national title! The week started with the Heptathlon, which turned into a 3-day event due to heat delays. My performance in javelin was strong, throwing the farthest of all the heptathletes; however, worsening ankle pain hindered my running and jumping performances. Because of this, I did not compete in the 100m dash as originally planned. Rather, I was able to focus solely on javelin. When Sunday arrived, I felt confident since I had seen some of my competitors during the Heptathlon and had already been exposed to the runway. I was sitting in 2nd place after the first throw but moved to 1st place after the second throw and stayed there for the rest of the competition. Top 8 was solidified and I was happy to get 3 more throws, an opportunity not afforded during the Heptathlon. Despite a headwind, I was able to throw a PR of 147'11" on my fourth throw. By my last throw, my nearest competitor was 12' behind, so at that point, I knew I had won! Overall, I feel my experience was very valuable and I'm proud to represent Indiana as a National Champion!
Congratulations to all Indiana athletes, coaches, and clubs an outstanding week in Savannah! From national titles and personal bests to dozens of All-American honors, USATF Indiana showcased talent, depth, and heart on the national stage.
