Carlile, Cox, Lesnet run to top 10 finishes at Junior Olympic nationals in Kentucky

11 Hoosiers earn all-American honors

On Saturday (11-Dec), 202 athletes representing 16 clubs from the Indiana association competed at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Paris, Kentucky. 
 
A total of 2548 athletes and 175 teams from across the country competed in the championships. 

The athletes were confronted with tough competition and less than optimal conditions on a wet and muddy course with strong gusty winds.  The schedule was delayed twice due to the weather.  Devastating tornados on Friday night were recorded just two counties away.    

Indiana clubs that fielded complete scoring teams were: Fayette County Youth Running Club (2 teams), Three Rivers Running (2 teams), Brownsburg Distance Running Club (1 team), Carmel Distance Project (1 team), Indiana Track (1 team), Wabash Track Club (1 team), and Wampus Cats Running Club (1 team).

Races were contested in 6 age divisions (8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18) for boys and girls.  The top 25 finishers in each age division earned all-American status and the top 3 teams were presented with championship recognition.  A total of 11 athletes from the Indiana association earned all-American honors.

The storylines of the day for the Indiana athletes were the top-10 finishes turned in by Austin Carlile (11-12 boys, 3rd place), Samuel Lesnet (Coram Deo Athletics, 7-8 boys, 7th place), and Cameron Cox (Center Grove Track & XC Club, 13-14 boys, 10th place).  

Carlile and Lesnet earned their second all-American honor in cross country. Previously Carlile won the 7-8 division in 2018 and Lesnet finished 17th last year in the 7-8 division.  Cox previous national championships saw him finishing 36th in 2020 in the 13-14 division and 43rd in 2019 in the 11-12 division.

The top finisher by an Indiana girl was Riley Teurman (Body in Training) who finished 14th in the 9-10 girls division.

The top team finishes were turned in by the Three Rivers Running 13-14 girls and 11-12 girls squads.  The 13-14 team finished 6th (out of 22 teams) and the 11-12 team placed 7th (out of 29 teams).

23. Elizabeth McAllister (Southern Indiana Running Club) 7-8 girls
23. Conyer Wilson (Unattached) 15-16 boys
