Guerra and Wiley win U20 U.S. titles in Oregon; Qualify for World Championships

(30-Jun) Four (4) USATF Indiana members competed in the 2022 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships that concluded on Saturday (25-Jun) in Eugene, Oregon.  The championships were the qualifying event for next the upcoming World Athletics U20 Championships to be held in Cali, Columbia August 1-6. The top two athletes in each event who met the world championship entry standard qualified to represent Team USA at the world championships.

Two (2) athletes from Indiana earned Team USA spots to compete at the world championships in August; and a third just missed making the team.

In the women's 1500m, Addison Wiley (Huntington, IN) ran to decisive victory as she stopped the clock at 4:15.53.  She was more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Mia Barnett (University of Virginia).  The time also bettered her previous best of 4:19.39 by almost four seconds.  It is the #16 U.S. U20 performance all-time.  Wiley recently graduated from Huntington North High School and has announced she will matriculate to the University of Colorado.

Georgetown University freshman, Lucas Guerra (Highland, IN) joined Wiley in winning a U.S. title as he won the men's 3000m in 8:19.36.

In the women's High Jump, Tacoria Humphrey (Indianapolis, IN; Univ. of Illinois) finished fourth with personal best of 1.81m (5-11¼).  Her previous best was 5-10. The top four finishers all ended the day with the same mark but Humphrey was regulated to fourth place based on the number of misses at lower heights. Humphrey was the 2021 Indiana state champion in the High Jump while at Warren Central High School.

2022 Indiana state champion, Cody Johnston (Hobart, IN) finished fifth in the Pole Vault with a clearance of 4.90m (16-0¾).  

In the men's Discus Throw, Christian Rios (Highland, IN; Marian University) finished 11th with a mark of 48.49m (159-1).
