Tyler selected as June Athlete of the Month

Shelby Tyler, 17, of Noblesville has been named the USATF Indiana Athlete of the Month for June 2018.

Tyler just completed her Junior year at Noblesville High School.

Tyler, the 2017 IHSAA state champion in the high jump, started the month off by defending her title at the 2018 Indiana high school championships in Bloomington on June 1.  Her winning clearance was 5' 11".

Two weeks later she was back in Bloomington for the USATF U20 (Junior) Championships.  At the U20 championships the top two athletes in each event would qualify for to represent Team USA at the IAA World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland July 10-15.  Competing against high school and college athletes, Tyler leaped a career best of 6' 0¾" to win the competition, on fewer misses over fellow high schooler Sanna Barnes of Texas, and earn a spot for Finland.  It was the first time Tyler cracked the 6 foot milestone.  The mark was the #3 all-time Indiana high school all-time. The state record is 6' 2¼" set in 1985 by Angie Bradburn of Norwell.

Following her win in Bloomington she drove nearly 600 miles to compete  in the New Balance Nationals the following day in Greensboro, N.C. In Greensboro she picked up her third win of the month as she cleared 5' 10½".

In all three of her wins in June she tied with other athletes for the highest clearnance but won each based on fewer overall misses during the competition.  At the New Balance meet three other athletes cleared 5' 10½".
