GETTING TO KNOW......Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff

How did you get your start in running?

Some of my cousins did cross country, and in seventh grade I decided I was going to do it without entirely knowing what distance running was. Then all of my friends were running as well, so I was hooked.

What would you consider the two most memorable highlights of your running career so far?

Winning the state meet as a team in 2020, and my senior year team camp this past summer. Winning state was the pinnacle of three or four years of work and dreaming together, and seeing that pay off in such dominant fashion was extremely gratifying and galvanizing. Team camp was when I got so incredibly close to the team, and everyone appreciated it so much more for having missed it the previous year.

Favorite subject in school?

It alternates between computer science and physics.

Favorite Workout?

We don’t treat it as a workout per se, but summer long runs are probably my favorite practice we do. They are around a beautiful lake in which we swim afterwards.

Favorite place to train?

I am addicted to running on singletrack trails to an almost problematic extent, to the point where I have injured myself by running for too long when I have access to trails.

Favorite Food?

A lot of stir-fried rice and meat dishes really do it for me.

Favorite Restaurant?

Thai Connection in downtown Columbus

Favorite music?

I enjoy most rock, and a lot of modern rap, but most especially any rap with trumpets in the sample.

If you could have lunch with one person who would it be?

Orson Scott Card. I would be fascinated to see what he would eat and I would love to pick his brain about all sorts of things.

Your Role Model(s)?

Danny Fisher and my parents certainly

Favorite Athlete?

Nick Willis. That man is sage and consistent and unshakable. I would like to have the kind of perspective he has on anything.

Goals for the remainder of cross country?  Track?

This track season I am aiming to break 4:00 for the mile, 1:50 for the 800, and 8:50 for the 2-mile.

Where are you at with the college selection process for next year?

I am going to Colorado University. It came out of a group which included Purdue, Boise State, Missouri State, and Colorado State.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

I would like to be employed doing something I’m happy with, and running in the mountains as much as possible.
